The Mata-ni-Pachedi is a narrative art form of Gujarat. The term originates from the Gujarati language, where Mata means ââ¬Ëgoddessââ¬â¢, ni means ââ¬Ëbelongs toââ¬â¢ and Pachedi means ââ¬Ëbehindââ¬â¢. It is the cloth which is used behind the Goddess in temples. When people of the nomadic Vaghari community of Gujarat were barred from entering temples, they made their own shrines with depictions of different forms of the Mother Goddess on cloth. Maroon (red) and black were the only colors used with the surface of the cotton material as the third color.
The artform first emerged when the Vaghri hunter communityââ¬âexcluded from the social system and prevented from entering templesââ¬âbegan painting the goddesses on a sacred cloth and hung it behind temples to worship.
