Environmental, social and corporate governance policy at Rural Handmade

Rural Handmade Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance Policy & Code of Ethics

  • We only work with small producer groups and brands, which are businesses owned, run or managed by the communities or their family, self-help group, Co-operatives, Non profit and other small businesses.
  • The collections are locally produced in small production runs via sustainable practices, and are run by artisanal communities or the makers themselves, wherever possible.
  • We urge a fair and transparent supply chain, ensuring that our communities do not use sweatshops, unsafe working conditions, trafficked, bonded, child or forced labour.
  • We envision to cater to a growing sustainable and meaningful consumption around the world by reinventing the global supply chain for consciously designed-purpose driven goods.
  • No farmed fur, exotic skins or feathers. This means that although we sell some animal hides such as cow and lamb, we only sell skins where they are a co-product of the meat industry. We will never sell a product where an animal has been killed for its skin alone.
  • We encourage our produced groups to only use sustainably sourced wood if making products from endangered or exotic hardwoods by utilising off-cuts or recycled wood. This means that they should not give to illegal logging or deforestation. We prefer sustainalble solid wood
  • We want to envision the world where we promote economic, social and environmental sustainability to the remotest of areas across the world.
  • We pay the vast majority of all sales proceeds directly to the produced groups by creating a clean and transparent commission. This means that they are able to pay better wages to their employees and partners, create better quality products, produce locally and leave less of an environmental impact in getting their products to you.
  • All the designs we sell are unique, original and proprietary to each person brand or partners. All items are manufactured by the designer or under their close guidance and produced specifically for them, to stringent quality standards. We will never sell another designer’s work passed off as an original.
  • We focus on impact across 17 goals laid down by United nations in our functioning. We aim to be carbon neutral by 2030. We work within a framework of continuous improvement, and encourage all of our brands to consider and cut the environmental impact of their business.
  • If it's not ethical, sustainable and handmade, we won't do it!
