A basket is traditionally crafted from stiff fibers and can be made from various materials such as wood splints, runners, and cane. Baskets are typically hand-woven, with distinct patterns evolving according to the culture and traditions of the region where they are made. The style of basketry varies widely depending on the craftsman and the available materials. Tripura, with its tropical savanna climate and heavy rainfall, is a significant region for bamboo and cane cultivation, earning it the reputation as the "bowl" of bamboo and cane handicrafts in India. In addition to Tripura, states like Nagaland, Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh are also renowned for bamboo crafts. Tribal communities, including the Debbarma, Jamatia, Reang, Tripura, and Noatia, use bamboo extensively in daily life, from construction to crafts, making basketry an essential part of Tripura's cultural heritage.
